I believe it is essential that I work in partnership with the parent (s) of each child.  Indeed active participation by parents is often essential to a successful prognosis.

Key to this is that parents become comfortable with the terminology we use and do not feel intimidated from asking what we are doing, why and what a technical term means.  I have produced a guide of useful terms that will help parents share in the understanding of what problems are effecting their child and how we plan to rectify or ameliorate the problem.  Please refer to the tests and tools page to learn about the technical tools we use to assess your child.

One of the important aspects of any treatment or intervention is that we try to address the cause rather than the symptom.

For example poor handwriting is a symptom that may be caused by two distinct types of problem.  A mechanical problem with the hand or a problem stemming from the brain's control of the hand.  The first cause will result in attention being paid to how the child uses their hand.  The second is likely to focus on helping the child's brain reconstruct the pathways required to control the hand.

As a consequence we may do no handwriting practice at all as this may be a complete waste of time if the basic building blocks or pathways are missing or insufficiently developed.  The diagram shown in The Learning Pyramid shows how a missing building block may result in an observed symptom.
