I have listed here a hopefully growing number of little tips and tricks that
you might find useful to try with your child.
Dressing
- Shoe laces - get some coloured pipe
cleaners, cut holes in card and then get your child to practice tying them.
- Socks - if
your child tends to get their socks muddled try buying some with
coloured toes and heels; they are more likely to put them on the
'right' foot. You can now get 'shorty' socks with a
small band of colour at ankle level; great for matching after
washing and even better for left and right foot coding.
- Ties - can't do their tie up? Put
on a new tie and do it up really nicely. Now cut it in
half at the back of the neck! Now sew Velcro on to
each end and let your child use this to fix their tie.
Bad memory
- Get some wipe-clean boards and put them in the kitchen, bathroom and
bedroom. Write daily tasks on the boards and get your
child to tick them off when completed. Helps short term
memory.
- Encourage your child to make lists of things like friends birthdays
and school events and then check them through with them
regularly.
Co-ordination
- Dance Mats - no doubt your child has
seen those dance mats in arcades or leisure centres. Well
for a child who needs to further develop their motor planning
and co-ordination they are brilliant. They provide indoor
exercise with no ball catching, help the child plan a sequence
of movements and gives positive feedback and a score to
beat!
Learning
- Music whilst you work - you may find it
difficult to get agreement in school but for many children
listening to music whilst studying is a very powerful way to aid
concentration and avoid distractions. One of my own
daughters always has music playing and finds it essential for
concentration and my husband similarly always listens to Radio 4
whilst working. If it helps your child try approaching the
school.
Computer use
- If appropriate do make use of a laptop or desktop to help your child
complete school work. If assessed as needed you can get dispensation
for them to use one at school and for exams.
